It is the day after Michael Jackson’s passing and the news has spread like wildfire, disseminated globally within hours thanks largely in part to the internet and social media. I’m sure most of you, were tipped off when you logged into Facebook yesterday to find status updates filled with MJ tributes – not to mention the ones inundating airwaves, text messages and news stations (unless, of course, you have in house reporters like Andrea to keep you in the loop). A shining example of the impact of technology.
Possibly more notable, are the trends in Google and Twitter over the past day. Just before and after his death was confirmed, 10 of the 20 Google hot trends were related to the incident peaking at ‘volcanic’ levels about 3pm. Apparently, over 22% of tweets noted ‘Michael Jackson’ as well – and 30% mentioned his passing – and led to strained service for Twitter.
