So long, cable TV
Digital cable? Bo-ring. A new software start-up, Boxee, recently unveiled its new social media center in alpha. Based on media center XBMC, Boxee “gives users a single interface to access all the photos, video and music on their hard drives, along with a wide range of television shows, movies and songs from sites like Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, CNN.com and CBS.com.”
Boxee will play most DRM-free video downloaded from non-iTunes/Netflix places. Including your “shared” media. And what’s more fun than sharing? Checking out what your friends are watching. This can also plug into existing social networks.
Oh, did I mention it’s open-source? Who knows what crazy apps may soon be available? What these potential new features or plugins will do, I can’t imagine. I need to find a plugin that will make me some mean pad thai…and deliver it. For free.
Sounds pretty cool, right? Just be sure you already (or you’re planning to) have your TV wired up to your computer. And you happen to be running Boxee on a Mac or Linux. For now, Windows users, you’re going to have to wait. But don’t fret, a version for you is in the works. And of course, remember, this is in alpha. You can bet our friends over at Boxee are still working out some kinks.
