Realism in UI Design

In the beginning, user interfaces didn’t have the ability to represent our reality. The metaphors used created a high impedance to interacting and understanding. As display technology has advanced, it’s become more and more possible to make a button look more like a button, and a “page” look more like a page.

But have you noticed? As we’ve cruised right up to the point where full-color, highly detailed, zoomable (even 3D) representations of anything are possible, we’ve kind of stalled out on the UI front.

In an excellent article on UI design, Lukas Mathis (of ignore the code) explains part of why that is.
