Five Simple Steps

I recently picked up this book as an aid for a class I am teaching. The book covers basic principles of design and strategic thinking, as well as some real-world industry advice from the author. A robust case study of the recently launched De Standaard Online was of particular interest:

As highlighted in this chapter, we approached this project as designing a kit of parts as a framework. A skeleton of a grid system, with modular content objects that could be placed in the grid, in various configurations, to create the site. If that approach is combined with a sensible colour palette, opportunities for art direction, and sensitive typography, as a designer, you are arming the editorial teams with all the tools they need to create a site from new and old content without designing individual pages.

Mark Boulton’s stuff is solid. I’d buy the book if I could.
