Beyond red and blue morality.

The latest issue of the Utne has a fascinating series on political polarization. As a nation, we seem less and less able to understand, let alone tolerate, the opposing side’s point of view. But in such a large and diverse country, how can it be that we so neatly divide into red and blue? And for those of us in the communications profession, what is the overlap that we all share in common? Yourmorals.org is an online study looking to answer these, and many other questions related to how we calibrate our moral compass. After a brief registration you’re asked to answer a series of questions related to one of five moral foundations. You can then compare your answers with self-identified liberals and conservatives. For me, the results were both surprising and reassuring. There seems to be a common foundation that we all share and the differences are a matter of emphasis, suggesting a much broader color spectrum than simply red and blue. See for yourself…
